An early example of Philadelphia almshouses, the Friends Almshouse was built in 1713. During the early colonial era the poor of Philadelphia were cared for privately by the community through institutions such as churches and trade and ethnic associations. The purpose of the Friends Almshouse was to serve as a sanctuary for poor, widowed, and aged Friends. This solution stayed in place until city officials, facing a growing population, saw the need to open city-run poor relief.
